Did Swami Vivekananda Support the Caste System?
Today it is a matter of pride for Hindus to travel the world. But did you know that in the 1800s, in the time when Swami Vivekananda lived the situation was quite the reverse?
In those days foreigners were called as Mlecchas or barbarians and Hindus were forbidden from interacting with them or eating food cooked by them. In the caste hierarchy Mlecchas were considered even lower than Shudras.
In this video we see how Swami Vivekananda and Sarada Ma both broke the prejudiced customs Hindu society practiced against Mlecchas. Swami Vivekananda even went ahead and gave deeksha to many foreigners and taught them Vedanta, an act which the Hindu orthodoxy found most shocking at that time.
